uh...help me come up with a title! please?
Aight, let's open a forum, right here...make this blog a little livelier. ;-)
I have just formed, or rather reinforced, an opinion that humanistic philosophies and attacks on the Bible, parts of the Bible, and all things labeled "traditionalist", "fundamentalist", or "conservative" (which I am encountering right here in college...in the thick of battle, actually) stem from a desire to justify an ungodly lifestyle, to silence the cries of a pained and seared conscience.
"A man's morality dictates his philosophy".
Agree? Disagree? Don't have the foggiest what I'm on about? Want to clobber me on the head with a 10-ton mortar? Make some noise, people! ;p

Yeah, I realise I tend to hate the most the stuff that I know I should be doing, but I don't.
Make sense?

Hi Joel,
Enjoying your stay in the US already, eh? Just gonna reply to your request for audience participation =)
I remember reading this, it's in my mind, but I'm not good at remembering verse numbers. So, thanks to a bible search engine:
Colossians 2:8 literally says, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."
It's the one and only hit for the word "philosophy" in the KJV, btw.
I remember reading this verse and going "Ahaa..." and thus realising that I didn't need to follow or let alone even consider views that conflict with what's clearly put forward in God's Word.
I think that while we may need to speak out against these evils, we don't always need to do a deep philosophical discussion where we bring up the latest theories of whatever-not in order to justify our position. Sometimes (most of the time, I would say), a simple "Because the Bible says so" is enough.
As long as we are solid in our proclamation of who Jesus Christ is, and what He said about mankind, we will not be easily shaken.
And so, to answer your proposal, that the reason behind all the philosophy and reasoning against traditional stuff like creation, sin, the sinfulness of homosexuality/ pornography/etc. is due to unscriptural morals; my answer is:
Yes. Why? Because man is sinful. Because the Bible says so. Full stop. End of sentence. End of discussion.
Hope this has made enough noise on your site to your satisfaction =)
Btw, what are you studying in the USA? and which part of the US? Your location on blog still says Georgetown Penang ;-)
God bless you,
Alwin

I think it's more a byproduct rather than a direct, deliberate attempt at avoiding personal responsibility over sin. Or it could be a mixture of both for some, but definitely a byproduct for all.

ahh...lovely, lovely, lovely...
i treasure all of your opinions...
thanks, alwin for the scripture. timely 'tis. ;-) i'm in arkansas, btw, in a small town called clarksville, proud residence of 9,000 people, 50% of which are over the age of 50. ;-)
and thanks, fellow el for your 2sen. ya, it could be a byproduct for some, but i still maintain that crooked living (which may involve an overemphasis on human wisdom vs. dependence of the HS for guidance and illumination) necessarily leads to crooked theology. i believe we must always depend on the HS when we interpet/read the Bible, cos of our fallen nature, etc.
